EOA-SOA-WOA Self-Assessment Exam 2021
Description

Release Date: December 31, 2022

Expiration Date: January 1, 2026

Time to Complete: 10 hours

Instructions for Participation and Credit:
In order for the participant to receive credit for taking the ESW SAE 2018, he/she must access the SAE program and read the pre-information to the exam. The participant will next access the exam questions using a login provided by Data Trace Management Services (DTMS). The participant will complete the exam at his or her pace and when all questions are answered, submit the answers for grading. After submission of the answers, the program will require the participant to complete the program evaluation questions. Once the evaluation questions are submitted, the participant will receive his or her grades; references; and certificate.

Activity Description:
The goal of the program is to evaluate a candidate’s general orthopaedic knowledge by providing high quality questions, scoring, discussion, and references in the following topic areas: hand, hip, upper extremity, sports medicine, total joints, spine, trauma, pain management, infection, and foot & ankle. Additionally, there will be three, three-day programs (the EOA, SOA and WOA Annual Meetings) with specific symposia to teach many of these topics. The SAE participants will have the option of taking the examination either before the meeting, to assist them in selecting specific symposia to direct their self-study efforts to those particular topic areas in which they performed less well, or after the meeting where they will get up-to-date information on these topic areas on the examination. Attendance at the meeting is not required to participate in the SAE process, since the SAE, as a standalone, will meet all ABOS requirements for an SAE. The meetings are another aid in advancing the physicians learning experience.

The questions will be similar to the educational content covered in Orthopaedic Knowledge Update 10 and will be developed by academic faculty from a number of highly regarded Orthopaedic Institutions. The exam will be approved by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons for SAE credit and the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education for Category 1 CME credit; the program will follow the below format.

1. Participants will register for the ESW 2021 SAE program, which contains a 100-question test.
2. Participants will take the examination via an electronic software program; the majority of the test will be based on symposia topics presented during the live program. This program will provide feedback by allowing the candidates to view their results and progress since the beginning of the program. The software has been programmed in the examination mode. In the examination mode, participants answer the questions at their leisure. Once they have finished the 100 questions, they submit their answers all at once and receive notification by email that they’ve completed the exam and if they passed, their CME certificate. They can download the correct answers with related commentary and references. The program helps the participants develop life-long learning. Not only will they receive the correct answers to all the questions, but the participants will also understand why their answers were incorrect by reviewing the commentary and references provided in support of each answer.
3. As the ESW 2018 SAE program will be available for three years, each association participant (EOA, SOA and WOA) may attend the three-day Annual Meetings, during which symposia will be presented covering most of the topics in the SAE. Attending these symposia will strengthen the participant’s knowledge of specific areas, and as noted above, can be used as a self-study review prior to the examination, or a focused self-study effort following the examination to address areas of poor performance. However, like other SAE programs, attendance is not required as it is a standalone program.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participants will be able to:
1.  Identify areas of study on which they should focus.
2.  Evaluate specific knowledge gaps.
3.  Identify performance strengths and weaknesses.
4.  Improve knowledge area and performance.

Target Audience:
The educational program is designed for orthopaedic and trauma surgeons.
